Arriving at the point of commitment

Commitment - by Chuck Kriese

Teaching the value of commitment is often the greatest gift a coach can give to athletes. The ability to make a commitment will be with them throughout their lives, whether it’s on a job, in a marriage, or in tennis. In any prosperous society, we can satisfy 70 to 80 percent of our needs and achieve 70 to 80 percent of our potential without a commitment. Mediocrity can bring a lot of awards in a prosperous society, without taking many risks, but the last 20 to 30 percent that brings total success cannot be achieved without total commitment.

Players often try to delay making a commitment by relying more and more on talent. The greater the natural ability, the longer the procrastination. Less talented athletes are more likely to make a total commitment sooner in their careers out of necessity.

The coach’s job is to discover which tool works best for each athlete, but the objective of any motivational technique is the same: To bring the athlete to the point of commitment. In our sophisticated world of biomechanical analysis and highly developed technical skills, motivation remains the most important aspect in achieving excellence.

After athletes make a complete commitment to their sport, the coach’s job becomes a much easier task of guiding them along the path of success. Without this commitment from the athlete, the coach’s job is frustrating and tedious. Commitment means ‘locking your back door,’ and full success cannot be realized in any endeavor with out it.

That sounds easy enough, but commitments are difficult to make because they involve risk. A 100 percent effort can bring success and elation; it can also result in defeat and great pain. Human nature tends to lead us to partial commitments, where the risk of pain is lessened, but unfortunately the path to success is also lessened. COMMIT 100 % AND SUCCEED 100% !!!
